In 2022, Mr Gyampoh, an engineer and lubrication specialist, became the first Black and first African to serve in the dual roles of Technical Editor and on the Editorial Advisory Board of TLT, the official monthly publication of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE).
Tribology is the science of friction, wear and lubrication.
Appointment
A letter from the Editor-in-Chief of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, Rachel Fowler, said: “Thank you for serving as a TLT Technical Editor during our 2023-2024 publishing year. TLT readers are enjoying this high-quality editorial content, and you are the main reason why”.
The letter further said: “Because you did such an outstanding job, TLT would like to extend an invitation to you to serve again during our 2025 publishing year. This invitation is extended with gratitude, and is based on the strength of the Idea Submission Forms you created last year, your attention to deadlines and overall performance”.
For his part, Mr Gyampoh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the dual roles for the past two years.
“Indeed, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime very rare opportunity to serve the world. I’m most humbled,” he replied.
However, Mr Gyampoh has served notice that 2025 would be his final year of service as he intends to bow out gracefully.
Technical Editor
As the Technical Editor, Mr Gyampoh is required to create three story ideas, namely a feature article, which should be an in-depth exploration of a technical aspect in one of his areas of expertise which is gears and gear lubrication. His other two areas of expertise are aviation lubricants and synthetic lubricants.
Additionally, he has to nominate an engineering personality in the field of tribology and lubrication, and set the agenda and question for a 20-minute question and answer session.
Contribution from Ghana
Mr Gyampoh said the last two years had been eventful as submission for publication in the TLT by some Ghanaians made positive impact.
For instance, he said, a submission by the Head of Department of the Motor Vehicle Engineering of Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC), Theophilus Ayetei, had been accepted as industry’s benchmark in gears.
Likewise, he said, a submission by the Mechanical Engineer of Cocoa Processing Company Ltd, Maxwell Sappor, on industrial gears and lubrication, and a take on gear functionality and flushing of gears by the Technical Director of DATES Ltd, Harry Kojo Sackey Jnr, had found considerable appeal with practicing colleagues in both industry and academia worldwide.
Moreover, a level 300 Industrial Engineering student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Natasha Larkor Lartey’s deep appreciation and understanding of tribology and lubrication engineering did not go unnoticed by both industry professionals and academia, with the student making an appearance as a participant at this year’s annual convention in the USA.
