GWL rewards loyal customers for prompt bill payment

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Accra East Region, has rewarded selected domestic and commercial customers for their commitment to paying their water bills consistently, promptly and in full.

This formed part of activities to commemorate the company’s Customer Service Month in October this year.

The event was aimed at appreciating customers who met their financial obligations.

The recipients included The Palms by Eagles Airport City, Melcom Mall at Spintex, Vanguard Heights, and two low-income consumers, Ernestina Jamah Sowah and William Ablorh Adjei, both at La, Accra.

They received souvenirs, packs of bottled water and other items in appreciation of their commitment to the prompt payment of their water bills.

Significance

The Chief Regional Manager of GWL, Accra East, Dr Richard Appiah Otoo, said the initiative was aimed at recognising customers whose prompt payment of water bills supported the company’s operations and service delivery.

He urged other customers to emulate the example of the awardees by settling their water bills promptly to help the company generate the needed revenue to maintain its operations and address challenges affecting water supply.

Dr Otoo said the region had adopted measures to recover outstanding debts, including sending short message service (SMS) reminders and making follow-up phone calls to customers who failed to pay their bills.

He said disconnection was the final measure taken against customers who continued to default.

Dr Otoo further entreated customers to report leakages and illegal connections in their respective communities.

Outstanding bills

The Public Relations and Communications Manager of GWL’s Accra East Region, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, said some customers made only partial payments, leaving outstanding balances that accumulated into arrears.

He said a recognised low-income customer, Ernestina Jamah Sowah, was an example of responsible citizenship because she consistently paid her bills in full and maintained a credit balance on her account.

Mr Barnie said as of September 2026, 23,959 domestic customers and 4,268 commercial customers had outstanding water bills in Accra East.

He said the region also reported outstanding balances of GH¢162,133,930.11 owed by private customers, while the figure for government customers was GH¢96,426,226.51.

Between January and September 2026, he said private customers were billed a total of GH¢261,048,721.71, out of which GH¢247,112,429.98 was collected.

Mr Barnie said the region’s average monthly billing for private customers was approximately GH¢29 million, while average monthly collections stood at GH¢27.4 million.

He added that approximately 470 customers had been disconnected for non-payment.

Appreciation

The awardees expressed appreciation to GWL, Accra East Region, and pledged to remain committed to the payment of their bills.

They urged other customers to also pay their bills on time and in full.

The General Manager of The Palms by Eagles Airport City, Mr Delali Gaisie, also thanked GWL for the recognition, saying water was essential to the hotel’s operations and its ability to provide quality services to guests.

For his part, the Group General Manager of Melcom, Mr Francis Sam, also gave assurance that it would continue to pay its water bills promptly.
