GIS rescues 105 foreigners
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully returned 105 foreigners to their home countries after an intelligence-led operation in Asankragwa led to the apprehension of 112 individuals suspected of being trafficked into Ghana.
The raid, carried out on May 20, 2026, by the Asankragwa Sector Command under Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Kwabena Adjei, targeted premises believed to be hosting persons engaged in commercial sex activities in the area.
A statement issued yesterday by the GIS said initial screening revealed the group comprised 110 Nigerians, a Beninoise and a Camerounian, all female, aged between 12 and 38.
The statement said they were later transferred to a holding centre in the Greater Accra Region for further processing.
It said subsequent investigations by the Anti Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons (AHSTIP) unit of the service identified seven suspects and confirmed 105 victims.
Embassies
It said the National Operations Department of the service worked closely with the relevant embassies and Camerounian community representatives in Ghana who facilitated the safe return of the victims to their home countries.
“The seven suspects remain under investigation and could face prosecution if found culpable,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Samuel Basintale Amadu, has urged foreigners to comply with immigration and criminal laws.
He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to combat human trafficking, migrant smuggling and related transnational crimes, while protecting vulnerable population from exploitation.
