The Ghana Agriculture Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET) has donated 1,000 bags of 10kg organic fertiliser in support of the 42nd National Farmers' Day celebration slated for December this year.
The Lead Coordinator of GAFET, Steven Nhyira Odarteifio, presented the items to the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Setor Dumelo.
Young farmers
Speaking after the presentation, Mr Odarteifio said the gesture was inspired by the need to support young farmers who would be awarded at the national celebration.
"I am one of many young people who have observed that we have an upcoming 42nd National Farmers Day in December.
And we have seen many patriots across our country coming forward, taking the initiative, and contributing whatever they can to support," Mr Odarteifio said.
He said he felt it was important to contribute to support hardworking farmers who were the reason Ghanaians were energetic and strong today.
"I thought it would also be great that I could pull a few resources together and contribute some organic fertiliser for young people who will be awarded on the day, and get inspired that the ministry, and in partnership with some citizens, have thought about them," he added.
According to him, the fertiliser was organic, made of saprophytic colloids and active peat, stressing that, "We need to see more young people applying organic agriculture".
Appreciation
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr Dumelo, who is also the Chairman of the Farmers' Day celebration, expressed gratitude, describing the donation as timely.
"On behalf of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, we want to say a big thank you to you for donating 1,000 bags of organic fertiliser.
“As chairman of the Farmers' Day celebration, we definitely need it.
We will put it to good use.
We shall distribute these bags to the farmers.
It's going directly to the farmers," Mr Dumelo said, promising that the fertiliser would be part of the prizes for the farmers.
"We need more prizes to give to the farmers, and so, as chairman, I want to say a big thank you to GAFET," he said.
