GA North takes steps to address devt challenges
The Ga North Municipal Assembly is taking steps to address the various development problems that have bedevilled the municipality.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ms Getrude Ankrah, measures were being put in place by the assembly to address water and sanitation problems and to improve the state of bad road networks within the municipality.

She made the statement at the assembly’s meet-the-press event in Accra.
The meeting was attended by community members, some chiefs in the municipality, government officials, the media and staff of the assembly.
Road network
The Ga North Municipality has a total road length of 225.46km but only 9.5 per cent is in good condition with 45.5 per cent representing bad roads.
However, the MCE assured the community members that majority of the roads had been awarded on contract, noting that the rains were delaying construction.
“I can say confidently that almost half of those roads have been awarded. Also, now that the President has authorised payment of contractors we believe that in about a month or two when the rains subside we will see massive improvement on our roads,” Ms Ankrah said.
She said roads under construction included those within Asofa, Amamorley road , Golden door, Mile 7, Omanjor area and Amanfrom.
Education
Ms Ankrah said the assembly was constructing 12 classroom blocks for some basic schools in the municipality to improve teaching and learning.
“We are constructing a two-unit classroom block at Amamorley Basic School, a six unit classroom block at the Methodist Primary School and a two-storey six-unit classroom block at the Ayawaso M/A school, all within the municipality,” she said.
Agriculture
Regarding agriculture, Ms Ankrah said they were training farmers in mushroom cropping, production and marketing as well as training market women on food safety and management.
“We are training farmers on pest management and control. We are also training them on proper spraying methods to reduce indiscriminate spraying of agro chemicals,” he said.
On sanitation, the MCE said the assembly was carrying out clean-up exercises, dredging choked drains and constructing storm drains to prevent flooding whenever there was a downpour.
On the way forward, she said that the assembly needed a permanent office to cut down cost on rent to allow them facilitate developmental projects in the municipality.
Referendum
Ms Ankrah used the event to educate community members on the upcoming December 17, 2019 referendum to decide whether Metropolitan, Municipal and District Executives should be elected.
She said for the amendment of Article 55 (3) to be effected, there should be 40 per cent of voter turnout with 75 per cent votes in favour of the referendum.
“The purpose of the December 17 referendum is to amend Article 55 (3) of the 1992 Constitution to introduce partisanship into District Level Election and allow political parties to participate in decentralised local governance.
Work on course
The Member of Parliament for the Trobo Constituency, Mr Moses Anim, reiterated their efforts to improve road networks in the municipality, saying that the Urban Roads Department had begun patching potholes on some major roads within the municipality.
“We understand the challenges of the road but we are working hard to ensure that the road network in the community is motorable,” he assured.
