Former Brong Ahafo Region to mark 60th anniversary

The 60th anniversary of the creation of the erstwhile Brong Ahafo Region is to be commemorated this year.

The celebration, which is being organised by the chiefs of the former region, is meant to preserve the history of the region, which has now been divided into three, namely, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions.

It will also offer a fitting departure from the former region and cement the common history of its people for development.

The theme for the celebration is: "United in separation for progress".

The celebration will commence on September 11, 2019 and climax with a grand durbar in November this year.

Cultural museum

The Chairman of the 60th Anniversary Committee, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, said at a news conference in Sunyani that to preserve the history of the erstwhile region, the chiefs had decided to construct an ultra-modern cultural museum at the Sunyani Technical University (STU).

The chairman, who heads a nine-member anniversary planning committee, said the cultural museum would remind the people of the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions and the public of their heritage.

That, according to Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, would help maintain the great history and culture bequeathed to them by the founders of the former region.

Appreciation

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former minister in the erstwhile Kufuor administration, said the commemoration of the anniversary was also to show appreciation to the life and works of their forebears and for the current generation to look back and know how far they had come.

He said the anniversary would be used to adopt strategies to make the aspirations of the new regions a reality.

“In essence, the celebration is to highlight the achievements of Brong-Ahafo @ 60 and coincidentally when the region was divided into three and to draw lessons that will propel our progress as we start life as new regions,” Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi added.

Activities

Activities to be undertaken during the celebration include a quiz among senior high schools in the three regions, symposia and a football match between old players of BA United and Bofoakwa Tano.

Theme

Throwing light on the theme for the anniversary, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi explained that even though the Brong-Ahafo Region was no more, the ties that bound the people were not severed.

"Even in separation, our long-cherished unity remains undisturbed and we still need to promote the development of the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions and the nation as a whole," he stated.

The chairman called on the public, including corporate organisations and institutions, to support the anniversary committee to organise a successful celebration.

He directed all interested individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to contact Abibrem Communications, the event organisers, to make their donations which would be captured in their publicity materials.
