Falling cocoa container kills two in Takoradi

Two persons in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis have lost their lives after a cocoa container truck fell on a Daewoo Matiz car they were in.

The truck was heading towards the Takoradi Habour for export but the container came off the truck which fell on the two occupants in the Daewoo Matiz on the highway.

According to the police, the incident happened around 9:30 pm on Friday November 27, 2020.

The two victims, who were identified only as Pamford and Ama were in a Daewoo Matrix private vehicle with registration number WR 1049-19 driving from Paa Grant Roundabout towards Kwame Nkrumah roundabout on the opposite side of the double road.

Speaking to the Graphic Online, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku said the driver of the truck veered of its lane upon reaching a section of the double road known as Vodafone, climbed the median to the lane of the Matrix been driven by Pamford.


In the process, she said the container detached from the flat-bed DAF articulator truck carrying the container and its content to the port of Takoradi and fell on the matrix crushing it and the two persons on board at about 9:30p.m.

Extrication & recovery

The situation, which resulted in heavy traffic on both sides of the double road, while the two occupants in the Matrix were still trapped until the rescue team from the Ghana National Fire Service and Road safety recovery arrived for extrication.

The body of the two was however recovered lifeless and removed to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Referral Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

The police managed to recover the two accident vehicles and towed to the yard of the Regional MTTD, Sekondi to make way for traffic, while the suspect driver is in police custody to assist in the investigation.
