The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Tema Region, has undertaken a major network improvement exercise involving the replacement of 14 faulty transformers across six districts to enhance electricity supply reliability.
The exercise, conducted between October 28 and November 1, 2026, involved transformers with capacities ranging from 100kVA to 200kVA, which had developed technical faults and affected power supply to customers.
The intervention covered the Krobo, Ada, Prampram, Afienya, Tema North and Nungua districts, out of the nine districts under the Tema Region.
The Regional General Manager of the ECG, Tema Region, Jonathan K. Adjabeng, explained that the replacement of the transformers formed part of efforts to strengthen the region’s high- and medium-voltage distribution networks and minimise disruptions to electricity supply.
He said the company had experienced supply challenges in some communities as a result of faulty transformers.
Illegal connection
Mr Adjabeng explained that while some of the faults were attributable to technical difficulties, others had been caused by illegal connections, which continued to place pressure on the distribution network.
He said the company remained committed to its responsibility of providing customers with safe, reliable and quality electricity, adding that the replacement exercise demonstrated its resolve to address challenges affecting service delivery.
He acknowledged that certain factors sometimes hindered the company's efforts but gave an assurance that the region would continue to tackle operational difficulties and find lasting solutions to improve electricity supply.
He reiterated the company's determination to surmount the challenges and fulfil its mandate of delivering dependable electricity services to consumers.
