The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) facilitated the refund of GH¢338,452.64 to consumers who were wrongly billed or overcharged by service providers.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic reporter last Friday, the Regional Manager of the PURC, Edward Boduah, said that through diligent regulatory intervention, the Regional Office secured GH¢338,452.64 as refunds to consumers who were wrongly billed or overcharged.
"We also recovered GH¢2,969,052.02 as revenue for the utilities, thereby striking a fair balance between consumer protection and utility sustainability", he noted.
Beyond financial recoveries, the office facilitated the replacement of four faulty electric poles, three faulty transformers and a defective energy meter, and assisted consumers to secure 35 new service connections that had been unduly delayed - bringing relief to many households and businesses.
Mr Boduah said the office demonstrated exceptional regulatory performance in the third quarter ending September 2026, resolving 1,076 out of 1,141 complaints filed against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Ltd (GWL).
This represents an impressive 94.3 per cent resolution rate, a testament to the Office's commitment to protecting consumer interests, while ensuring the financial viability of regulated utilities.
Of the total complaints received, 1,090, representing 95.5 per cent, were lodged against ECG, while 51, representing 4.5 per cent, were against GWL.
He said a breakdown of complaints showed that the quality of supply category dominated, with 1,072 complaints, representing 94 per cent of all cases.
Billing followed with 38 complaints, metering with 15, consumer service delivery with nine, payments with four and unlawful disconnection with three complaints.
In terms of how complaints reached the PURC, field activities accounted for 810 complaints, WhatsApp platforms brought 236, walk-ins 37, Consumer Service Committees 26, written complaints 18 and call-ins 14.
This performance, according to the regional manager, was achieved through proactive regulatory interventions during the period.
He assured the public of the PURC's commitment to ensuring reliable, safe and high-quality utility services for all consumers in the region.
