Ahlussunaa Wal’ Jama marks Eid

Hundreds of Muslims yesterday converged on the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra to mark this year’s Eid ul-Adha festival with special prayers.

The worshippers, who belonged to the Ahlussunaa Wal’ Jama sect, and were immaculately dressed in different fabrics and colourful robes, started arriving at the park by 7a.m. amid singing praises of “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest ) in unison as they walked towards the prayer grounds at the park.

At exactly 9a.m. when the call for prayers sounded, all activities and noise ceased, with the “Umah” congregants lining up for supplications to Allah.

Former President John Dramani Mahama graced the occasion.

Peace

The Deputy National Chief Imam of the Ahlussunnah Wal Jama’ah, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed, who led the prayers, called on Muslims all over the world to promote peace among themselves.

He said peace and harmony were the major tenets of Islam and the foundation upon which the religion was built.

Sheikh Mohammed also asked for God’s protection, guidance and favours for the nation as he also prayed for wisdom and blessings for the President and the government.

The Iman further prayed for the security of the nation, as well as the various security agencies to ensure the safety of the people at all times.

“There have been recent challenges in the country pertaining to our borders, harbours and ports. Failure to put up adequate security measures at these places could cause harm to the nation by criminals and other ill-intended people.

“The recent kidnapping cases in Sekondi-Takoradi and in other parts of the country is most unfortunate,” he added.

Sheikh Mohammed advised parents and guardians to keep an eye on their children at all times to ensure they were not lured by strangers.

According to the Islamic cleric, safety and security in the country can be achieved by being vigilant in the communities and voluntarily reporting suspicious persons and happenings to the police.

Sacrifice

Former President Mahama, who stressed the significance of sacrifice, entreated the people to cultivate the habit of supporting the less privileged in society for the betterment of humanity.

He reiterated the need to ensure peace and security in communities for the accelerated development of the country.
