The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed robbers believed to be operating within Zebilla, Garu and Binduri in the Upper East Region.
The suspects, whose ages are between 20 and 41, have been identified as Issaka Iddrisu, 20; Ali Tamimu, 21; Akugre Amobila, 26; Banabas Apiiga, 41; Abdul-Rashid Adamu, 38; Apiiga Alebena, 21; and Bilal Adabodee, 31.
The police said the arrests were made through an intelligence-led operation involving the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PID), the newly formed Black Cobra Unit and the Zebilla Neighbourhood Watch Community.
A statement dated September 17, 2026, and signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Raman Sumaila of the Police Public Affairs Unit of the Upper East Regional Command, indicated that the suspects had confessed to belonging to a wider network of gangs that supplied them with weapons for their operations in the three communities.
Victims identify suspects
The police said following the arrests, two victims reported to the Command and identified two of the suspects as part of a three-member armed robbery gang that robbed them at gunpoint of two Yamaha scooter motorbikes.
The motorcycles were valued at GH¢30,000 and GH¢32,000 respectively.
The victims told the police that the robbers threatened to kill them if they reported the incident to the police.
The suspects subsequently admitted to robbing the victims at gunpoint and told investigators that the weapons used in the operation were supplied by another suspect, whose name has been withheld, and who resides in Bawku.
The police said the unnamed suspect was identified by the arrested persons as their source of weapons.
Items recovered
The statement said a search conducted at the residences of three of the suspects, Abdul-Rashid Adamu, Apiiga Alebena and Bilal Adabode — led to the discovery of two unregistered motorbikes, quantities of hard drugs and GH¢29,550 in cash.
The police said the money was believed to be proceeds from their criminal activities.
The seven suspects have since been remanded into police custody by the Bolgatanga Circuit Court.
They are to reappear before the court on September 23, 2026.
The Police Command said the arrests formed part of efforts to clamp down on robbery activities in the affected communities.
