56,003 Teachers receive teacher promotion salaries, arrears

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Of the total number, 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, 2026, together with their October salaries.

A statement signed by the Head of Public Relations of the CAGD, Cephas N. Dosoo, said, “These payments covered salary adjustments and arrears from January 1, 2026.

Deadline

The statement said a further 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026, indicating that the payments were completed ahead of the October 16, 2026 deadline agreed between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2 this year.

The CAGD statement further explained that out of the reported 80,000 promoted teachers, GES processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633.

It said the CAGD verified and paid 56,003 teachers while 630 cases remained pending due to issues identified during the verification process by the CAGD.

It added that “the CAGD awaits the resolution of these issues by GES for the payments to be effected.”

Payroll requirement

“The remaining 23,367 teachers are yet to be processed and relevant documents submitted by GES.

The CAGD has therefore completed payment for all teachers whose submitted records met the payroll requirements.

The department remains committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections are made or complete and accurate documents are received and verified,” the statement assured.

The CAGD, according to the statement, expressed its appreciation to the GES, the teacher unions and the participating ministries and agencies for their cooperation.

Background

The promotion-related adjustments and arrears were among the three reasons pre-tertiary teachers embarked on strike recently.

Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) embarked on a strike action over what they said was the failure of government to pay the promotion-related arrears, 20 per cent deprived area allowance — a campaign promise — and failure to address their expired collective agreement.

After arriving at an agreement with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the unions directed their members to go back to work from Monday, October 12, 2026.
