2,000 Residents at Klikor Afuta enrolled on NHIS for free
Two thousand residents of Klikor Afuta in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have been registered for free on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
An initiative of the chief of the area, Torgbui Tsifokpe III, and in collaboration with the Municipal National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), it is aimed at ensuring that his subjects have access to quality healthcare services.
The initiative, which was also supported by some friends and business organisations, is in line with his plans to prioritise the health and well-being of members of his community.
Quality health care
Speaking at the registration event, Torgbui Tsifokpe said the exercise was inspired by the need to have a healthy community by reducing the financial burden of health care on his people and thereby improving productivity.

He stated that the development and progress of any community or society was dependent on the health and productivity of the people hence the need to ensure that his community had access to health care.
“It is important that everyone has access to quality health care and given the cost of accessing it, I discussed with the Queen and elders to register those who did not have the NHIS.
This will help ease the burden.”
“Also, in July, I am hoping to invite some health experts from abroad to visit our community.
They will come with some mobile hospitals or hospitals on wheels to attend to your needs.
“When that screening exercise is done, those of you who will require further medical attention can then use the NHIS card to visit the health facilities to access further treatment,” Togbui Tsifokpe told the beneficiaries.
Education
The chief said he was also keen on improving the quality of education of the children in the community and promised that some interventions would be rolled out so that children of school age would not only be enrolled in school at the appropriate age, but remain in school at all levels.
“Education holds the key to development and progress and we will ensure that our community is not left behind by initiating an intervention that will ensure that no child is left uneducated in this community,” Togbui Tsifokpe stated.
Awareness
A beneficiary, James Futukpor, on behalf of the others, commended the chief and his elders for the initiative, describing it as ‘very helpful.’
He called for more education on the importance of not only being enrolled on to the NHIS, but also keeping it active so that it would serve the intended purpose.
“We thank Togbui, Mama and the elders for this initiative. It will be very helpful.
However, given that many people are ignorant about the importance of being a member of the NHIS, it will be good for the authority to step up the education and create more awareness of its benefits so that more people will appreciate the need to keep their cards active, even after this exercise,” Mr Futukpor stated.
