Ghana@60 parade

An Independence day Parade is morning being held at the Black Star square to climax activities for the 60th Anniversary celebration of Ghana. Thousands of Ghanaians are participating in the activity that has seen other Heads of States arrive in the country to commemorate the day.

Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and Togo's Faure Gnassingbe are a few of the several dignitaries in town for Ghana's 60th Independence Day celebration.

Ahead of the celebration, some major roads in the national capital, Accra, have been closed to traffic.

President arrives

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wearing a white batakari over black trousers took the national salute when he arrived the parade grounds a few minutes after 10am.

Prayers were then said after which, the President inspected the parade accompanied by the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The president took his first ride on the national ceremonial vehicle to inspect the contingent formed by the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Navy, Ghana Air Force, Ghana Prisons, Ghana Police, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Prisons, Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Immigration Service and the schools contingent.

Perpetual flame

President Akufo-Addo after inspecting the parade moved to the cenotaph of the unknown solider to light the perpetual flame. The lighting of the flame signified the rekindling of the Ghanaian spirit.

The President lighted the Ghana 60-year on torch which signified the beginning of the year long anniversary. The torch will travel across Ghana making stops at all 10 regional capitals in the course of the year. The torch was handed over to boxing legend "Professor Zumzum" Azuma Nelson who then sent it to the Accra Sports Stadium to hand it over to the Greater Accra Regional Minister.

March past

President Akufo-Addo was on his feet as the parade was underway.  The contingent marched past followed by Makola and Agbogbloshie women with their wares.

The market women danced as the band played. They were followed by movie actors from Kumawood.

Dance performance

Dance performers took over after the march past. They designed a beautiful star in the middle of the parade ground.
