Ghacem announces deadline for QLA finalists

The Communication Coordinator of the of the Ghacem Quarry Life Awards (QLA) competition, Mr Solomon Ayiah, has applauded participants in the QLA competition for the impressive work the have done so far and urged them to finalise their reports for submission before the deadline.

He said the five finalists who had been selected had up to Friday, September 30 to submit their final projects.

The QLA is an educational and research-based initiative by HeidelbergCement (HC) Group and its subsidiary companies, including GHACEM Limited of Ghana, to source ideas towards the effective management of biodiversity in all its mining sites across the globe.

Mr Ayiah said three projects and finalists would be selected to represent the country on the international stage later this year.

“Ghana stands tall when it comes to the QLA Competition for having placed at the International level in the first two editions. The onus now lies on us to go for the ultimate in the third edition and as such commitment from each participant is very key,” he observed

The QLA National Coordinator, Kwabena Labi Addo, paid tribute to colleague national coordinators and the national jury members for teaming up to provide good coaching in ensuring Ghana makes yet another strong case in the third edition of the competition

A national Jury member, Dr Erasmus Owusu, who is a Conservation Biologist and Head of Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science of the University of Ghana advised the participants to endeavour to make their reports very scientific, remembering that as a scientific report, it should be feasible and good enough to be replicated.
Most of the participants in an interview with the media were upbeat about making a strong case at both the national and international stage. They expressed optimism that the various research objectives had been achieved.

Project titles
The finalists have the following as the title of the projects: Masen Koranteng (Geospatial Analysis of biodiversity changes in and around the Yonqwa Quarry site); Daniel Cudjoe (Restoration of Biodiversity using Voandzeia subterranean [Bambara beans]: Michael Owusu-Tweneboah (Determination of the Best Soil Enrichment Method using ANOVA Technique); Jonas Dwomoh (Slope Wall Stability and Biodiversity Promotion: The Use of Gramineae-Bambusoideae [bamboo]– A Case Study at Yongwa Quarry) and Emmanuel Taye (Impacts of Quarry Dust on Water Resource and its Effect on Biodiversity: The Odonata Assessment
