Gabby Otchere-Darko drops hints on what to expect from Budget

As Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta gets set to present the 2017 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government, various media publications speculating outcomes have also pointed to high public expectations.

From job creation and tax cuts, social interventions to detailed rollout plans for free SHS and cedi stabilization, Ghanaians are looking forward to plans for the fulfilment of election-time promises by the new administration.

But while the many publications have largely been hinged on speculations, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, founder of the Danquah Institute and nephew of President Akufo-Addo who is thought to be a government insider, has been tweeting some of what Ghanaians can expect from the budget.

Gabby thinks “Ken can make vehicle owners and commuters happy today”, a likely pointer to the fulfillment of government’s campaign promise to reduce petroleum levies and give the petroleum regime a humane touch. Two responses to the tweet are divided, one solid on hope for good things to come and the other demanding commitment.

Again Gabby is asking the public to “Expect from Ken Ofori-Atta a budget that is low on taxation and high on productivity”.

The full year Budget Statement and Economic Policy for 2017 is expected at 11am and will be live on Graphic Online. You can also read subject-by-subject stories from the presentation.
