Ga-Dangme students commended for voluntary service

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ada West in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi, has commended Ga-Dangme students in tertiary institutions for their outreach programmes in the Englesi Kenya community in the district.

He said the voluntary service was not only beneficial, but also a wake-up call to parents in those communities to be serious with the education of their children.

The DCE pledged the assembly’s support to subsequent programmes of the students to enable them to cover more areas in the district.

Mr Akrofi gave the commendation when he addressed a durbar that was attended by the Ga-Dangme students union, pupils, chiefs and people of Okudzetokope, Gornikope and Mission that form the Englesi-Kenya community to climax two weeks education activities in the area.

Membership

The tertiary students included those from the University of Ghana Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Professional Studies (UPSA).

The over 50 students offered voluntary services in the teaching and health sectors. While some taught in the basic schools in the three communities, others embarked on health screening for both adults and children in the various schools.

The 2017 Rural Educational and Health outreach programme, was on the theme, “Intensified Basic Education for future development.”

Concerns

Mr Akrofi said the programme, even though successful, had raised some nagging issues in education and health which, he said, were of concern to the assembly.

He noted, for instance, that the standard of education had fallen not only in the district but nationwide.

According to the DCE, some students and pupils did not still understand the value of education for which reason they did not attach much importance to schooling.

“If we get people like these university students, who are from these areas for that matter Ga-Dangmes, to serve as role models for the younger ones, then their perceptions on education may change for the better,’’ Mr Akrofi added.

The DCE challenged the beneficiary students and pupils to aspire high by learning from the examples and achievements of their seniors.

Objectives

The leader of the group, Nii Afadi Annoh, from the University of Ghana, said their aim was to offer voluntary service in the three communities to encourage the younger ones to be more serious with their studies.

He said there would be follow-ups to monitor the impact of their work to guide them in their future services.

An elder of the Okudzetokope community, Mr Benjamin Buernor Okudzeto, thanked the students for their selflessness and commitment to support the younger ones in the area.
