Four injured in accident

Library photoFour persons, including an articulated truck driver, sustained multiple injuries when the truck on which they were travelling crashed into four stationary vehicles around the Sewua Junction on the main Lake Bosomtwe highway yesterday.
The truck driver, identified as Mark Apam Ayinbona, was alleged to be escaping from an accident he had earlier caused and was, therefore, driving at top speed to escape arrest when he lost total control of the vehicle.

All the injured were rushed to the Kumasi South Hospital at Agogo, where they are receiving emergency medical care.

The others were identified as Paul Twumasi, Abdul Karim Issah and one Kwabena.

According to an eyewitness, Mr Kofi Oppong, he was at the spot to repair his tyre when the truck crashed into his vehicle, with registration number AS 3339- S.

Other vehicles destroyed were a Hyundai Grace mini bus, with registration number AS 5626 N; a Daewoo taxi, with registration number AE 848-13, and a Nissan saloon, with registration number GT 9212- W.

According to Mr Oppong, he was in the vehicle and about to move away when he had a message on his cell phone.

He said a few seconds after he had got out from the vehicle, he heard a loud sound and realised that the truck had smashed into his vehicle and three others parked at the spot.

"It was by the Grace of God that nobody was in any of the vehicles at the time the truck smashed into them," he declared.

A police source who briefed the Daily Graphic said the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the DAF articulated truck, with registration number AS 8192-11, which was heading towards Kumasi from the Sewua Junction went out of control.

It said about five minutes earlier, the driver of the truck had smashed the vehicle into a kiosk but sped off towards Kumasi.

According to the source, it was in attempt to escape from the accident scene that he lost control of the truck and caused the accident.
