Upper East: Four arrested over killing of Zebilla couple

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a juvenile, in connection with the killing of a couple at Kusanaba in the Zebilla District of the Upper East Region.

A statement issued by the command on June Monday, 22, 2026, said the suspects, identified as Safianu Salam, Awal Salam and Jawal Salam, together with a juvenile whose identity has been withheld, were arrested at a hideout in Kugre near Garu on June 19, 2026.

The statement said the victims, Apam Azubilla, 45, and his wife, Apam Anomsigna, 35, were shot and killed in their room at Kusanaba on June 10, 2026.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that four armed men entered the couple’s room that night and opened fire on them.

The statement said despite sustaining gunshot wounds, Azubilla managed to call for help. His brother, Ayubugre Apam, who heard the call, rushed to the room and found the couple lying on the floor.

The victims were taken for medical treatment, but Anomsigna was pronounced dead on arrival at the Zegoyire Health Centre.

Azubilla was subsequently referred to the Zebilla District Hospital for further treatment but was also pronounced dead on arrival, the police said.

The statement said an examination of the bodies confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds.

It added that the family later handed over three spent AK 47 ammunition shells recovered from the scene to assist with investigations.

The police said the four suspects remain in custody and will be put before court.
