Former GWCL engineer launches autobiography

A former Chief Operations Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Matthew Adombire, has launched his second book, titled “The Silent Wisdom of Nature — Thoughts of a Savannah Native”.

The book, which recounted the life of Mr Adombire, an engineer, was written to portray how a group of people managed to derive meaning from the happenings in the environment.

The 365-page book also highlights the experiences of the author in relation to the occurrences in his life journey.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the launch, Mr Adombire explained there were lots of wisdom in nature that could only be uncovered if individuals adopted a sense of observation of their surroundings.

According to the civil engineer, he chose the biographical style for his second book to share his discovery and critical observations of nature over the years.

“My perception of these observations may stir controversies and touch on the socio-cultural and religious sensibilities of others. However, let us debate them maturely and not take entrenched positions that will stir trouble among the good people of God,” he added.

Review of the book

Reviewing the book, a former Editor of the Ghanaian Times, Mr Enimil Ashon, said the book was about life “caught in a cross-current of culture, economics, sociology and engineering.”

He said the author’s focus on the Gurene, a society of an ethnic group in the Upper East Region, demonstrated how European culture had huge influence on the local people, stating architecture, food and language.

Mr Ashon reflected the author’s lamentation that “we were taught the European culture instead of Christian Religion, consequently we are half-baked in our own culture and that of the foreign ones”.

Commendations

The President of Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), Mrs Carlien Bou-Chedid, commended Mr Adombire for the book, stating that engineers were ordinarily known for the technicalities in their publications and not social stories.

She, therefore, praised the author for his efforts, describing him as a good writer who had key interest in observing nature, the reason for his book.
Mrs Bou-Chedid launched the book with a call on other personalities, particularly engineers to pass on their expertise through writing for the betterment of society.

GWCL

In a speech read on his behalf, the Managing Director of GWCL, Dr Clifford Braimah, also commended Mr Adombire for the book and said the company would support his work.

He described the author as a meticulous person who made an impact wherever he found himself.

“Mr Adombire, during his time at GWCL, left an indelible mark in the company and, therefore, I believe his book will influence the reader positively,” he said.
