Flooding forces shutdown of Mallam and Achimota substations – PURC monitors power outages

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is monitoring ongoing power interruptions by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following heavy rains that have caused severe flooding across parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a statement issued on June 29, the PURC said it is actively monitoring the situation and its impact on consumers.

For the sake of public safety and the prevention of loss of human life, the Commission, in consultation with service providers, agreed to the shutting down of the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations, which had become severely flooded and dangerous to operate.

The unplanned shutdown has led to a disruption in power supply to several parts of the Greater Accra Region.

Independent PURC technical teams are on the field to assess the level of damage caused and are in constant touch with service providers to have the issues resolved in the shortest possible time.

The Commission acknowledged the frustrations of consumers with respect to the unannounced outages and the impact on businesses and households, and sincerely apologised for any inconvenience caused as a result of the act of nature.

Consumers are encouraged to report any further challenges to the Commission via 0302240046, WhatsApp numbers 0540126201 or 0559722581, or the toll-free number 0800100700.

The PURC reaffirmed its commitment to balancing the interests of utility providers and consumers to ensure the delivery of safe, stable, and reliable utility services.
