Flood victims receive share of Vice-President’s GH¢100,000 cash

Some victims of the recent floods in the West Mamprusi Municipality in the North East Region have received their share of the GH¢100,000 cash donation by the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

About 1,080 victims in the affected communities benefited from the cash donation in addition to the assorted relief items that were presented by the Vice-President.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Mamprusi, Mr. Aremeyaw Somo, who disbursed the money to the beneficiaries, said the money was disbursed to those who had their rooms destroyed by the floods to enable them to put up temporary structures for shelter, while they waited for the government to support them to rebuild their houses as assured by the Vice-President.

While commending Dr. Bawumia for the gesture, he called for more support from benevolent organisations and philanthropists to improve on their situation.

“We are still appealing to institutions and individuals to support us with more relief items because a lot of the victims who were affected by the floods earlier are also there, though the Vice-President and the assembly have done their best we still need more relief items,” Mr. Somo appealed.

NADMO

When contacted, the North East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. John Kweku Alhassan, said the flood waters had begun receding and that his outfit was currently conducting an assessment to ascertain the extent of damage caused during the floods.

At least six communities in the West Mamprusi Municipality were entirely submerged with over 1,000 residents displaced by floodwaters following a downpour in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, this year.

The incident claimed the life of a three-year-old boy, who fell into a pit during the flooding at Gbani.

According to disaster managers, about 58 houses collapsed during the downpour that lasted about six hours and caused some dams to break their banks.

Vice-President donates

A day after the incident, Dr. Bawumia, who is a native of the area, suspended his tour of the Greater Accra Region to present GH¢100,000 and quantities of relief items to the victims.

He said it was an immediate intervention to alleviate the plight of the victims as the government continued to mobilise resources to improve their situation.

The items included bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, maize, tins of milk and beverages, mattresses and mosquito repellent.

The Vice-President, who also toured the affected communities to assess the extent of damage and to empathise with the victims who had been temporarily sheltered at various camps, expressed the government's commitment to support the victims to rebuild their houses when the flood receded.
