First phase of Awoshie-Pokuase road completed

The first phase of the 15-kilometre Awoshie-Pokuase road spanning Awoshie Junction to Palas Junction at Anyaa is ahead of schedule.

The second phase, which begins from Palas Junction to Pokuase, is, however, behind schedule.

Currently, the first phase of the construction is about 80 per cent complete and the second phase is  83.25 per cent done as against a scheduled completion of 85.63 per cent.

The Director of the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), Mr Abass Awolu, made this known during a visit by representatives of the two major financiers, the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), to the two projects.

The government is also providing 4.79 million Euros for the project.

The two – the French Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Frederic Clavier, and the Resident Manager of the AFD, Mrs Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade – led by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Amin Amidu, visited the sites to see progress of the project.

The project so far

China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Co-operation is working on the first section of the road, which is a three-kilometre, three-lane dual carriageway, beginning from Awoshie to Anyaa.

The works for this section are being executed at a cost of GH¢6,813,982.00 with an additional amount of $15,612,381.94.

Meanwhile, China Railway Wuju (Group) Corporation is also executing the 12.2-kilometre road from Anyaa to Pokuase at a cost of GH¢77,030,103.20.

Both contractors have carried out extensive work, which includes asphalt overlay and drainage works.

At the time of the visit, some aspects of the work such as the construction of retaining wall at some sections were ongoing.

Financiers’ impression

Both Mr Clavier and Mrs Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade expressed satisfaction with the pace and progress of work.

They were particularly happy about the community development component, which they explained would directly benefit residents in that part of the Greater Accra Region.
