Energy Commission Board calls on Power Minister

The Board of Directors of the Energy Commission, led by its Chairman, Dr Kwame Ampofo, has assured the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, that the commission has lined up a number of energy-saving measures which would  help solve the current power deficit.

Some of the measures, according to Dr Ampofo, are promoting the use of alternative and renewable energy, roof-top solar panels, installation of automatic timers on deep freezers and refrigerators, which are all designed to conserve energy and make additional power available to the nation and people.

The board also discussed the planned restructuring of institutions within the power and energy sectors and in particular, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Expressing his appreciation for the board members’ visit and their innovative ideas for the sector, Dr Kwabena Donkor said in view of the dire financial straits that the state was in, it might be appropriate for the Energy Commission to explore non-state budgetary sources to fund some of the projects they intended to undertake.

He urged the commission to work closely and collaborate with other agencies within the sector such as the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to ensure a well-oiled power sector with the common determination to end the current energy challenges and eventually make Ghana the hub and net exporter of power in the sub-region.
