Residents of Kumasi and its surrounding communities are set to experience planned power interruptions from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 29, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertake critical works to complete a major transmission line upgrade.
In a joint statement issued in Tema on Thursday, October 29, the two utility companies, under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, announced that the 161kV Anwomaso–Ahodwo (K1–K2) Transmission Line Upgrade Project has reached 70 per cent completion, marking significant progress towards improving the reliability of electricity supply in the Ashanti Region. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026.
The companies explained that the project has reached a critical stage involving the stringing of transmission conductors on the towers. This activity requires planned interruptions in electricity supply to some communities along the line route to protect the lives of engineers, other personnel working on the project and members of the public.
Accordingly, the planned power interruptions to communities along the line route in Kumasi will commence on Friday, October 30, and continue until Sunday, November 29, excluding weekends.
Communities along the line route will experience power outages between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on days when the stringing reaches their section, in line with the planned schedule.
The Electricity Company of Ghana will publish a comprehensive schedule detailing the areas to be affected and the corresponding outage dates to enable consumers to plan accordingly.
GRIDCo and ECG acknowledged the inconvenience the planned interruptions will cause households, businesses and other electricity consumers, appealing to the public, particularly the affected communities, for patience, understanding and cooperation throughout the period.
While the temporary interruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful completion of the works, the companies noted that the project represents an important investment in strengthening the transmission network and improving the reliability of electricity supply in the Ashanti Region.
They sincerely apologised for the inconvenience and assured the public of their commitment to completing the project safely and as scheduled.
