DVLA chalks up 3 GITTA awards

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has been honoured with three prestigious awards at the ninth Ghana Information Technology and Telecom Awards (GITTA) at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The Authority received the 2019 Best Government website of the year, Best use of ICT in the Public Sector, and the Public Sector IT Man of the Year which was conferred on its Chief Executive, Mr Kwasi Agyeman Busia.

The annual event, which is organised by Instinct Wave, recognises innovation and excellence in the country’s ICT sector by rewarding individuals and institutions in the ICT and telecommunication sectors.

The latest honours brought to 16 the number of awards received by the DVLA and its Chief Executive in the last two years.

Vice President

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who was adjudged the Digital Leader of the year, commended the DVLA for being one of the state agencies leveraging ICT to improve its service delivery as he addressed the ceremony.

He said the driver’s licence and vehicle registration smart cards which were launched last year and this year respectively had reduced the process and time of obtaining driver’s licence and registration of vehicles drastically.

Dr Bawumia announced that in the coming months, the Authority would leverage technology by introducing integrated database with the National Insurance Authority on motor insurance records to make it easy for law enforcement agencies to check uninsured vehicles to rid the system of fake documents.

“It will be bad news for people who do not pay vehicle insurance. The police can just put in your car number through a particular code and they will know if the car is insured or not,” he said.

The role of ICT, the Vice President said, could not be overemphasised, and mentioned the paperless system at the ports, the digital address system, mobile interoperability, renewal of National Health Insurance card, e-procurement, the digitisation of the legal system, business registration and drone delivery services as some of the innovations that technology had brought to bear on the Ghanaian system.

Improving services

In an interview, Mr Busia expressed gratitude to the Minister of Transport, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, the Board, Management and staff of DVLA for the collective contribution towards improving the services of the Authority.

He said he would continue to pursue his vision of service optimisation and financial autonomy guided by system integration, enforcement, entrenchment and data analytics in sync with the broader strategic vision of the Authority.

GITTA is the most prestigious awards programme in the industry, with its sterling status earning the ‘Oscar Awards’ for excellence in Ghana’s ICT sector.

Over the years, besides promoting excellence in the telecom sector, it has evolved and extended its wings to include companies which made strides in innovation and business adaptation of technology.
