Dr Ernest Addison appointed Governor of BoG

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison as Governor of the Bank of Ghana effective April 1, 2017.

He takes over from Dr Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku who announced his resignation on Wednesday.

A statement signed and issued on Thursday by the Director of Communications at the Flagstaff House, Mr Eugene Arhin, said the appointment was made in accordance with Article 183 (4) (a) of the Constitution subject to consultation with the Council of State.

It said the appointment was made swiftly, "In order not to have a vacuum at the top of such an important state institution,” and that a letter dated 30th March, 2017 from the President has accordingly been sent to the Council of State.

It said: “On Monday, 27th March 2017, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, received a letter from Dr Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, indicating his resignation from office, effective Saturday 1st April, 2017. The President, with considerate regret, has accepted his resignation."

Dr Ernest Addison was, until his appointment the Lead Regional Economist of the African Development Bank, at its Southern African Resource Centre. From 2003 to 2011, he served as the Director of Research at the Bank of Ghana; and was the Chief Economist of the West African Monetary Institute, from 2001 to 2002.

Dr Addison, an Economics graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon, holds an M.Phil in Economics and Politics from the University of Cambridge, England, and Ph.D in Economics from McGill University, Canada.
