Daily Graphic gets new Editor

The Board of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has appointed Mr Vincent Kobina Asmah, professionally known as Kobby Asmah, the new Editor of the Daily Graphic, the flagship newspaper of the GCGL.

Until his appointment, Mr Asmah, who is a Chevening scholar with more than 27 years’ experience in journalism, was the acting Editor and Political Editor of the Daily Graphic.

The board also appointed Ms Doreen Hammond, the Features Editor of the Daily Graphic, as Editor of the Junior Graphic.

The management of GCGL has also appointed Mr Samuel Doe Ablordeppey as the News Editor of the Daily Graphic, as well as Mr Kwame Asare Boadu and Ms Rosalind Koramah Amoh as Deputy News Editors of the Daily Graphic.

New Daily Graphic Editor

Before assuming the role of Political Editor 13 years ago, Mr Asmah acted as the Foreign Editor of the Daily Graphic on many occasions, where his job schedule involved selecting and analysing foreign news for publication in the Daily Graphic and other papers of the group.

He takes over from Mr Ransford Tetteh, who retired from the company on March 7, this year.

With more than a decade of service at the senior management level, Mr Asmah was awarded a Chevening Scholarship by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom (UK) through the British Council to pursue his master’s programme in Journalism Studies at the prestigious Cardiff University, Wales.

He also won an Indian scholarship to pursue an Advanced Diploma Course at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication.

He was given the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Award for International Understanding in April 2001.

Mr Asmah is also a product of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and an old student of the Saint Augustine’s College, Cape Coast.

He has attended a number of international and local workshops and seminars and written extensively on global and local politics, human rights, media and conflict resolution, among other issues.

His areas of interest include international and local politics, development journalism, media and conflict resolution, international relations, including working as a diplomatic correspondent.

Rising through the ranks from a cub reporter to senior reporter, senior staff writer and principal staff writer, Mr Asmah has also written extensively on a wide range of national and international events bordering on diverse fields of human endeavour.

As an award-winning Ghanaian journalist with many years of experience on the Ghanaian media landscape, spanning the print and the digital media, Mr Asmah’s write-ups have also received commendations from the Ghanaian public and he was adjudged the Managing Director’s Best Worker for the year 2008. 

He also won the GJA 2008 Best Journalist in Political and Parliamentary Reporting Award.

He is a goal getter and optimist who enjoys travelling. For him, it is one veritable source of information and education which equips him to become better informed and be abreast of events in other places and countries. 

Vision

Mr Asmah’s vision is to make the Daily Graphic, Graphic Online and Graphic News App leading global media brands, with a focus on editorial independence.

He also gave an assurance that he would adhere strictly to the GCGL’s normative values and culture of working with integrity, fairness, truthfulness, accuracy, credibility and as a balanced team leader.

New Junior Graphic Editor

Until her appointment, Ms Doreen Hammond was the Features Editor of the Daily Graphic, a position she had held since 2008.

From April this year, she was appointed acting Editor of the Junior Graphic, in addition to her regular schedule. She has also acted as Editor of the Graphic Showbiz in the absence of the substantive editor.

Ms Hammond is a columnist of the Daily Graphic and multiple Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards winner — Best Report for Health (Print) 2018; Best Report for Education (Print) 2015; Best Feature Writer (Print) 2011, and Best Feature Writer (Print) 2010.

While she was a Senior Staff Writer from May 2004 to 2008, she acted in various positions, including Features Editor, Education Page Editor and  Women’s Editor.

She worked with the New Times Corporation from 1991 to 2004 where she was a reporter, acting Women and Children’s Editor of the Ghanaian Times and the News Editor of the Spectator.

Ms Hammond holds a Master of Arts degree in Communication Studies and a Graduate Diploma in Communication Studies from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is a product of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

She has covered many national and international assignments and benefited from a number of short courses in Journalism.

News Editor/Deputy News Editors

Mr Ablordeppey has reported broadly on issues cutting across business, financial, economics, agriculture, energy, oil and gas among others.

He has almost 20 years of journalism experience, spending 16 of those years at the GCGL.

Mr Ablordeppey served as Sub-Editor and Deputy News Editor before his current role.

He graduated from the GIJ in 2000 with two awards: The Overall Best Student in Journalism and the Best Student in Mass Communication and has since gone on to make a remarkable impact on business and financial reporting in the country.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Ghana Business School and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in General Management from the School of Business, University of Cape Coast.

Mr Ablordeppey has attended many courses and seminars in Ghana, the West African sub-region, South Africa, Europe and the United States of America, including a Journalism Masterclass at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

He has also won awards at the Gold Awards for Business Journalists, the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for Business and Financial Journalism, and the Ghana GJA awards.

Mr Boadu

Mr Boadu started his career with the Graphic Group in Sunyani and moved to Kumasi in 2001. He was later transferred to Accra in 2014 as the Presidential Correspondent.

He served as the acting Deputy News Editor from December last year until his appointment into the substantive.

Mr Boadu is a product of the GIJ and the University of Education, Winneba. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration, a diploma in Purchasing and Supply and Journalism.

An accomplished writer and mentor, his areas of interest include the environment, sports journalism, politics and other social issues.

Ms Amoh

Ms Amoh joins the News Desk with a rich background as a sports journalist with over 23 years’ work experience.

She joined the GCGL in 1998 and worked with the Graphic Sports, where she held the position of Staff Writer until she joined the News Desk.

Though well known in sports, she is a versatile journalist and in 1999 won the GJA Best Journalist Award on Environmental Reporting for her works on e-waste.

Ms Amoh is a product of the GIJ, from where she earned a first degree in Journalism. She is currently working on her dissertation for her master’s degree.
