Curfew imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya

The decision to take that measure, according to a statement issued by the Minister of the Interior, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, was based on the advice of the Volta Regional Security Council.

It advised the chiefs, opinion leaders, youth and people in the two communities to channel their energies into ensuring the return of lasting peace to the area.

Meanwhile, there was heavy police-military presence in Alavanyo, Nkonya and surrounding communities to prevent renewed communal clashes.

There were reports of sporadic shooting at the outskirts of the two towns throughout Saturday but the security patrol teams were able to contain the situation.

The two communities have a long-standing feud over a parcel of land but the latest turmoil was sparked by the murder of an elderly man at Alavanyo on Thursday, March 21, 2013.
