The Court of Appeal sitting in Kumasi has dismissed an attempt by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to halt a defamation suit filed against him and Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited by Samson Lardy Anyenini, a lawyer and a journalist from the Multimedia Group Limited.
The three-member panel presided over by Justice Eric Baah, on Wednesday (October 21, 2026) dismissed Abronye’s repeat application for a stay of proceedings pending an interlocutory appeal.
The court awarded GH¢10,000 in costs against him.
The ruling was the third time Abronye had attempted to prevent the substantive defamation action from proceeding.
The suit, commenced in April 2025, concerns alleged defamatory statements broadcast on Wontumi TV and Radio.
Abronye had said Anyenini was dishonest and corrupt, and that he received US$50,000 to use his position as a host of the Newsfile programme on Joy FM and Joy News TV to disgrace Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, a Member of Parliament.
Samson Anyenini has denied the allegation and is seeking damages and other reliefs against Kwame Baffoe Abronye (3rd defendant), Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited and a host at the media company, Kwaku Kyeremanteng Nkansah.
Abronye was yet to file a Statement of Defence answering the allegations and had initially challenged the competence of the suit.
In November 2025, the High Court in Kumasi declined to strike out Anyenini’s action, ordered a reassessment of filing fees and rejected Abronye's other procedural objections.
