Mary Timah

Court determines Mary Timah’s fate February 27

The Accra Circuit Court hearing the case in which a 40-year-old trader and mother of three, Mary Timah, tortured her son by burning him with a hot electric iron on suspicion that he stole GH¢20, has fixed Friday, February 27, 2015 to give its judgement on the case.

This was after the court completed the examination of the prosecution witness and, thereafter, examined the accused.

The accused was once again remanded in police custody.

The proceedings were held in camera but an inside source told the Daily Graphic that Inspector Kofi Atimbiri gave evidence on how the boy had come to the police to complain and events thereafter that culminated in the matter being brought to the court.

Accused apologetic

When Mary Timah took her turn, the source said she was very apologetic and told the court that she genuinely regretted her action and would never again, under any circumstance, harm her own son.

The presiding judge, Mrs Rita Agyemang Budu, after examining her, concluded her inquisition and announced that on Friday, February 27, 2015, she would give her ruling.

When the victim exited the courtroom, the expression on his face reflected sadness and he told the Daily Graphic that “I want my mother home with us. I miss her and cannot sleep at night”.

Mary Timah, on the other hand, looked quite resigned to an unknown fate, sitting in court with her gaze fixed on the ceiling of the courtroom as she waited to be escorted back into custody.

Her husband had kept mute throughout the day in court occasionally burying his face in his palms and heaving sighs.

Victim suffering from mother’s absence

The assembly member for Osu-Alata, where the family lives, Mr Hubert Kpakpo Garshong, told the Daily Graphic that the boy was suffering in the absence of his mother and expressed the hope that at the end of the case, mother and son would be reunited.

For him, what was very important was that the woman had learnt her lesson and expressed apology that she would never do any such thing again.

The Daily Graphic last Monday carried a story in which a 14-year-old boy had reported his  mother to the Ministries District Police Station for allegedly burning parts of his body with a hot electric iron on suspicion that he had stolen GH¢20.

The boy claimed his mother first placed the hot electric iron on his wrists and while he was screaming for help, she positioned it on his face and neck.

Escape

Neighbours and siblings of the boy banged on the door and pleaded with Timah to set the victim free.

But their pleas did not save the boy until he managed to escape from the barbaric act and dashed to the police station.

After the victim had told the police about his ordeal, Timah was arrested and charged with the offence of causing unlawful harm.
