Confucius Institute celebrates 2nd anniversary

Confucius Institute, which promotes Chinese language and culture globally, has celebrated the second anniversary of its operations in Ghana.

The anniversary was held on the campus of the University of Ghana, Legon on Wednesday.

The institute has been promoting Chinese culture, social integration and cultural infusion with Ghanaians since its establishment in Ghana. It has been facilitating the teaching of the Chinese language in Ghana.

It is non-profit public educational organization affiliated to the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.

Addressing the anniversary gathering, Dr Melian Mei, Director of the Institute said the teaching of Chinese language in Ghana has expanded Chinese culture and strengthen its local influence. 

She said the Confucius Institute will continue to work hard to help more Ghanaian students to learn Chinese and to obtain scholarships to study in China. 

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana Professor Ernest Aryeetey expressed satisfaction at the level of development of Chinese culture in Ghana.

He said the Confucius institute has made giant strides to meet the academic needs of all persons who have various Chinese Language and culture needs.

He said the establishment of an HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Centre in Ghana will increase the chances of Ghanaian students to gain admission into Chinese higher institutions of learning as well as secure scholarships.

He said Ghanaians stand to benefit not only from Chinese language and culture but also the essential Chinese Traditional Medicine and martial arts such as Tai chi.

A parent, whose child was awarded a Chinese Scholarship from the Confucius Institute, said Chinese culture will give their kids an advantage in their education and careers in years to come.

She said parents of students studying Chinese language and culture have benefitted indirectly by having the opportunity to attend some Chinese events and other opportunities to experience Chinese language through supervision of their children's Chinese homework.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Madam Sun Baohong said the Confucius Institute has made remarkable achievements in teaching Chinese language and promoting Chinese culture. 

She said the Chinese culture plays an important role in promoting mutual understanding and exchanges between Ghana and China and therefore expressed gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ernest Aryeetey for supporting the development Chinese language and culture at the University of Ghana.

The colorful ceremony was interspersed with performances such as Chinese dance, opera and songs by Ghanaian Chinese students.
