Concerned Youth of Manso want mining site commissioned

The Concerned Youth of Manso, a pressure group of Manso Nkawnta in the Amansie West district of the Ashanti region has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to direct the appropriate agency to visit and commission one of the proposed community mining sites at Manso Atwere.

They say such a visit will help offer the needed advice and direction for a good take off and also help in the fight against Illigal Mining.

The youth were expecting the President to visit the site after commissioning a boy's dormitory at Mansoman Senior High School on the first day of his tour of the Ashanti region on Wednesday but that did not happen.

Statement

The youth in a statement signed by spokesperson, Mr Kwaku Ratty, are accusing the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Joseph Albert Quarm, for not reminding the President of the planned visit which is directly opposite the high school.

The statement sees the action by the MP as a deliberate attempt to stampede the project which is being financed by an individual by not allowing the president assess it.

The youth whose main business is mining said the lack of interest shown by the MP amounted to encouraging people to go back to the days of illegal Mining popularly referred to as galamsey.

"Indeed, Mr Quarm, also a board member of the Minerals Commission, is one of the people leading in the implementation of the community mining concept to promote environmentally friendly mining and safeguard the country's natural resources," the statement said.

The youth find it ironic for someone who is leading the charge would not show interest in its commencement.

The statement, therefore, urged the president to step in to prevent the youth from going back to the days of galamsey.

Response

Attempt by Graphic Online to reach the MP for his reaction was not successful.
