The $20,000 machine and its accessories were donated to the hospital by Zeal Environmental Technologies Limited, a maritime environmental waste company.

Earlier in the year, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Reverend Kweku Ennin, had presented a cheque for GH¢50,000 to the hospital towards the management of cases of children who had mistakenly taken caustic soda.

He further promised to purchase an endoscopy machine for the hospital to help in the management of cases.

Handing over the machine to the KATH authorities, Rev Ennin also promised to purchase a paediatric flexible bronchoscope equipment, valued at $15,000, to assist the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The Head of the unit, Dr John Aoabie Appiah, commended Rev Ennin for fulfilling his promise to buy the machine for the unit.

He appealed for the purchase of the paediatric flexible bronchoscope equipment to facilitate the treatment of lung diseases among children.

Background

Over the last two years, the hospital has seen many cases of children, most of whose parents are into soap manufacturing, who mistakenly drink caustic soda.

The throats of the children are damaged and they are given temporary bypasses in their abdomen while they are prepared for surgery.
