Christians must lead fight against crime - Presby Moderator

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt Rev. Prof. J.O.Y Mante, has stressed the need for Christians to spearhead the crusade against the high incidence of criminal activities in the country.

He noted that the moral decadence such as rampant armed robberies, money rituals, occultism, rape and defilement, among the youth could erode the gains the country had chalked so far.

Anniversary

The Moderator made the call when he addressed the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the West Akyem Presbytery at a grand ceremony at Akyem Oda.

He emphasised the need for Ghanaians to sacrifice for the development of the nation instead of concentrating on amassing wealth at the expense of the country.
Ghana, Rt Rev. Mante said, abounded in human and other natural resources, but what was left was their effective utilisation for the development of the nation.

He expressed regret about the get-rich attitude of Ghanaian youth, citing the recent murder of a 10-year-boy by his peers for money ritual at Kasoa, stressing that that attitude did not speak well of the country.

He congratulated the West Akyem Presbytery on its silver jubilee, saying its successes should be emulated by other churches.

Personal donation

During his seven-day tour of the West Akyem Presbytery, he personally donated GH¢28,000 towards chapel buildings, school block construction and rehabilitation, as well as for the sponsorship of brilliant, needy territory students to complete their education.

The beneficiary communities included Oda, Assin Praso, Assin Akropong, Akyem Ayirebi, Akokoaso, Aduasa, Akyem Wankyi, Akyem Swedru, Apoli, Akyem Manso and Akem Asuboa South.

At Oda, Rt Rev. Mantey, on behalf of the PCG headquarters, donated six new motorbikes to the pastors of six branches of the church, while the West Akyem supplemented with three more, all to enhance ministerial work in the hinterlands.

Earlier, the West Akyem Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Dr Benzies Isaac Adu-Okoree, thanked the founding fathers of the presbytery and a number of personalities who had contributed towards its growth and expansion.

Dignitaries

Among the dignitaries at the ceremony were the Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Mr Alexander Akwasi Acquah; the Municipal Chief Executive for Birim Central, Ms Victoria Adu; the new Controller and Accountant General, Mr Kwame Kwaning Bosompem; and the Dabehene of Akyem Abenase, Nana Nkansah Akom.

An appeal for funds for the development of the presbytery yielded over GH¢16,000.

The Moderator later inaugurated a new sachet water factory established by the presbytery at Oda as revenue generation venture.
