Ms Tchwenko further explained that the support is being carried out with relevant stakeholders such as the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs),the Ministry of Health (MOH),the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and the Information Services Department (ISD).

“Throughout April, there was weekly radio broadcasts in local languages to 146,600 community members in the Upper East Region and six districts in North East and Northern Regions on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation's URA Radio to promote protective behaviours and essential hygiene practices” the Country Director revealed.

National support

Ms Tchwenko said in April 2020, CARE donated an amount of GH¢50,000 to government’s National COVID-19 Trust Fund to complement Government’s effort in the fight against the pandemic and to mitigate its impact on most vulnerable households.

On Support to the Cocoa Growing regions, she indicated that the organization has secured “an amount of US$1.3m in new funding from a donor for COVID-19 response in cocoa-growing districts targeting 400,000 citizens with prevention messages, supporting community preparedness, and providing assistance to district response planning and coordination”.

She said CARE is still working with individuals, institutional and corporate donors to mobilise and reallocate more resources to complement COVID-19 response in the country.

Care Ghana

Ms Tchwenko stated that CARE has been working in Ghana since 1994 with more than 40 partner organisations to implement interventions that promote integrated program approaches to the fight against extreme poverty and social injustice, seeking to sustainably transform the lives of poor and vulnerable women and the youth in Ghana.

Assembly

The Bolgatanga East District Coordinating Director, Mr David Nar-Ire, said the assembly with support from relevant institutions has been sensitising communities on the COVID-19 and the need for them to strictly observe all the health protocols particularly social distancing which he noted has been a challenge in the district.

He explained that the assembly has also provided Veronica Buckets and other hygiene materials to markets and institutions to help curb the spread of the virus in communities.

Mr Nar-Ire stressed the need for a closer collaboration between the assembly and relevant institutions to curb the COVID-19 pandemic in the district and the entire region.
