Calm returns to Obuasi

The AGA Basic School is yet to be reopened following threats by the illegal miners to attack the school.

According to the Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP) Mr Kofi Dwumfour Berchie, four people were injured on Wednesday.

Two of them, who were seriously injured, were rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for treatment.

Mr Berchie explained that the two seriously injured victims had been shot during the melee.

He said nine people were arrested on Wednesday but released after initial investigations.

According to Mr Berchie, the nine were roaming in the community in the heat of the armed galamsey insurrection and were, therefore, not connected to the violence, hence their release.

On why the illegal miners took up arms and started threatening the lives of residents, ACOP Berchie said the attack was directed at officials of AngloGold Ashanti.
