Updates: Buhari takes lead in Nigeria elections
Results from Nigeria's elections, potentially the closest contest since the end of military rule in 1999, are trickling in with Presidential challenger Muhammadu Buhari taking several northern states.
Eager Nigerians are highly anticipating results of Saturday’s polls that were extended to Sunday in the most fiercely contested election in the country’s post-independence history that seems likely to wind down to a tense conclusion.
Results are trickling in amid fears that the polarised electorate would clash regardless of the outcome in a country sharply split along ethnic and sectarian lines.
Graphiconline's correspondent in Abuja, Kwamena Nyamekye reported that the electoral commission began declaring state results on Monday with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), the party of presidential challenger Muhammadu Buhari, taking the most votes in Oyo, Kogi, Kwara, Kestina, Kaduna, Osun, Kano, Jigawa and Ondo states.
The ruling PDP took the most votes in Nasawara, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Akwa Ibom and Anambra states and the FCT (Federal Capital Territory).
The election body, Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has saId it expects to announce the final results on Tuesday. After declaring results from 18 states n Monday night, the chairman of INEC, PRof Attahiru Jega said the commission was taking a break to continue Tuesday morning.
Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan is facing a strong challenge from former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari.
Prof Jega reminded the media, both traditional and social that it was only the INEC that could declare results and that those who speculate and post uncertified results would be dealt with according to law.
Our correspondent, Nyamekye said many Nigerians have been glued to their radio and television sets, while those who are hi-tech savvy have resorted to searching for information on the internet, especially through facebook, whatsapp, twitter and instagram.
Streets of major towns like Abuja and Lagos have not returned to their usual packed traffic jams.
Political party spokespersons, particularly from the PDP and the APC have resorted to psychological warfare in the media, assuring their supporters that their parties were wining.
The two main political leaders have not commented on the results as of now.
