Be safety compliant

The Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched its 2015 Safety, Health and Environmental week celebration with a call on workers to be safety compliant.

Dubbed “Enhancing safety, health and environmental consciousness at the workplace,” the week-long celebration is meant to create awareness of safety at the workplace.

It would also give opportunity to customers of the company to interact with the workers and make known their concerns for them to be addressed.

In view of the celebration, various activities, including health screening, clean-up exercises at the regional offices, health walk and a thanksgiving service have been planned for the occasion.

In a speech read on his behalf at the launch of the celebration in Accra, the Managing Director, Mr Robert Dwamena, said the company was committed to ensuring that staff worked in a conducive environment.

He noted that workers of the company were exposed to a lot of risks and environmental hazards and said efforts were being made to ensure an atmosphere free of dangers.

“We strongly believe that accidents and risks to human health are preventable through continuous improvement in our work environment; and the involvement of all employees in creating a safe, healthy and accident-free work place for employees and the society at large,” he said.

ECG’s safety policy

As a limited liability company, the General Manager of the Accra West Region of the ECG, Mr George Appiah-Kubi, said it had a safety policy document in place which spelt out safety standards and it needed to be complied with by the staff.

Any member of staff who failed to comply with any of the 19-point safety policies enshrined in the document, according to Mr Appiah-Kubi, would be charged with a breach of the safety rules which could lead to summary dismissal or termination of appointment.

That, he said, was one of the measures the company had put in place to ensure safety at the workplace.

Awareness creation

Commenting on the celebration, the regional manager said the programme would also provide the company with an opportunity to interact with its customers about its activities and operations.

“We’ll use this celebration to reach out to our numerous consumers and customers about how they can also help ECG to serve them better,” he stressed.

He said the company would also use the period to run promotions on various media platforms as a way of educating the public on its activities.
