Armed robbers kill two at Zebilla Market

Two people were killed while one person sustained gunshot wounds when four  armed robbers attacked a provisions shop at the Zebilla Market in the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region last Friday night.

The robbers, who were riding  two unregistered motorbikes during the operation, wielded AK 47 Assault rifles and allegedly fired indiscriminately after an alarm was raised by shop attendants and nearby shop owners.

Deceased

The Bawku West District Police Commander,  Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) James Ankan, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the deceased were identified as Imoro Hero (38), a pedestrian who was hit by a stray bullet and Abdulai Yarini (38), a shop attendant. They died upon arrival at the Zebilla Government Hospital. The two bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the hospital for autopsy.

ASP Ankan stated that the third surviving victim, identified as Musa Awudu (30), also a shop attendant, was currently responding to treatment at the same hospital.

Police commander

According to the commander, an unknown caller informed them of the incident at about 8:30 p.m. last Friday but on arrival at the scene the robbers had bolted with their booty. He indicated that when the police interrogated Awudu, the only surviving victim, he stated that the robbers took away more than GH¢200,000 from safes in the shop where the daily sales were kept.

ASP Ankan further explained that the police had launched a man hunt for the robbers and added that the District Security Committee (DISEC) held an emergency meeting to review the security situation in the area.
