AMA starts street naming exercise
Streets totalling 3,584 have been identified and named by the Town and Country Planning for the Accra metropolis under the ongoing nation-wide street naming exercise.

So far, all 3,584 streets identified in the 10 sub-metropolitan areas of Accra have also been digitised, and a pilot signage is currently ongoing at the Ashiedu Keteke sub-metropolitan area.
Out of the number, 337 streets are at Ablekuma Central, 329 at Ablekuma South, 421 at Ablekuma North, 86 at Ashiedu Keteke, 173 at Ayawaso Central, 94 at Ayawaso East, 638 at Ayawaso West, 410 at Okaikoi North and 302 at Okaikoi South.
The project is estimated to cost GHc3.8 million.
The Technical Officer for the Accra Street Naming Project, Ms Ernestina Clottey, expressed optimism that going by the progress made, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would be able to meet President John Mahama’s deadline of 18 months, which ends in September, next year.
The commencement of the nation-wide street naming exercise began shortly after the President’s directive in March this year, instructing all the assemblies to identify and name streets in their various areas of jurisdiction.
Speaking to participants at a two-day workshop on the Land Administration Project (LAP-Two) funded by the World Bank, Ms Clottey, however, indicated that some unscrupulous people were already stealing the signage, while careless drivers were also knocking others down.
“We are learning from the experience we have at Ashiedu Keteke to enable us to use more secure plates and poles to ensure that they last”, she stated.
Ten personnel trained in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been engaged to facilitate the timely completion of the work.
