Akyem Abuakwa to honour longest-serving queenmother

A grand durbar to honour the longest-serving queenmother at Akyem Abuakwa, Asuomhemma Nana Yaa Anamah, will come off on Saturday, November 11 this year at Akyem Asuom in the Kwaebibirem District in the Eastern Region.

A research conducted by the office of Her Royal Majesty, Nana Adutwumwaa Dokua, the Okyenhemaa of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, has indicated that Nana Yaa Anamah II has been the queenmother of Akyem Asuom for the past 75 years.

Nana Yaa Anamah is currently reputed to be over 100 years old.

The grand durbar is expected to be graced by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin; Her Excellency Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady of the Republic, and H.E. Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, former President of the Republic of Ghana.

Ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) expected to grace the occasion include the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Kofi Dzamesi; the MP for Tema West, Mr Kingsley Ahenkorah, who incidentally hails from Asuom; the MP for Atiwa West and Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako Attah; the MP for Aburi-Nsawam and Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr O.B. Amoah, and the MP for Abuakwa South and Minister for Works and Housing, Mr Attah Akyea.

The Okyenhemaa, Nana Dokua II, will lead a high-powered delegation of chiefs and queenmothers of Akyem Abuakwa to honour the longest-serving queenmother of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.

Meanwhile, Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II, the Asuomhene, has stated that the people of Asuom are ready to host visitors who will throng the town on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

He said the people were eager to see their King, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin; Her Excellency Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the ministers and MPs, as well as queenmothers of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area who would be attending the event.

The celebration in honour of the queenmother of Asuom will be held on the theme: “Celebrating a traditional leadership of excellence—the role of women in modern chieftaincy.”

The occasion is targeted at rendering gratitude to God and celebrating the achievements made by Nana Yaa Anamah II over the years.
