The 67-year-old Dr Mensah, together with three other people, pioneered fiber optics manufacturing and communications systems to help make data transmission on the internet faster, carry more data than copper cable can go and without interference.

Fiber optic cable is faster because it carries more than a thousand times the bandwidth of copper cable and more than one hundred times further as well.

Dr Mensah is noted for his particular improvements to the process of making fiber optic cables dramatically improved and cost-efficient in producing it, helping to clear the way for a much greater degree of fiber optics technologies at work in the world.

He has 14 patents, seven of which were awarded within a period of six years, and was inducted into the US National Academy of Inventors in 2015.

In his other work, Dr. Mensah increased the practical applications of fiber optics and has also sought to improve the status of African-American inventors and historical figures.

Honour

He attended Adisadel College in Cape Coast and completed in 1968 and so at a dinner in Accra on Saturday organised by the Adisadel Old Boys Association, they presented him with a medal, a gold ring, an Adisadel cloth and a citation for his contribution towards the world of technology.

Led by the President of the Adisadel Old Boys Association, Mr Kojo Yankah, Sir Sam Jonah, himself an old boy and a renowned businessman and Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, decorated Dr Mensah with the medal.

Two other old boys, Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng handed over the gold ring and Dr Sam Mensah presented an Adisadel cloth to him.

The citation presented to him read: “The Adisadel Old Boys proudly presents the AOBA Distinguished Award for Excellence, 2017, to you Dr Thomas Owusu Mensah, Santa 68, for your outstanding achievements, inventions in fiber optics and nanotechnology which has impacted the world’s scientific and technological advancements.”

Brief background

Dr Mensah did his undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology from 1970-74.

He won the French Government Fellowship in 1974 to do graduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Montpelier University France.

Prior to his undergraduate work, Dr. Mensah attended Wesley College practice school, Kumasi and Adisadel college Cape Coast for his O Level (1968) and A Level (1970).

He holds a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from Montpelier University 1978, and a Certificate in Modeling of Chemical Processes from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (1977)
