Accra Psychiatric Hospital in need of assistance
Workers of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have bemoaned the poor level of security at the facility.

They say for sometime now the staff have suffered cruelty from some violent and aggressive patients of the hospital, resulting in various degrees of injury to the victims.
According to Mr Emmanuel Pappoe, a Principal Nursing Officer (PNO) at the hospital, some members of staff who have been attacked have had their lips cut, faces slashed and eyes pierced, among other injuries.
He said under such circumstances, the staff of the hospital were demanding to be paid risk allowance and improvements done to the general building in the hospital. In addition, he has urged the government to act immediately to save the situation before it gets out of hand.
He stated that this year alone, 10 nurses had sustained various degrees of injury as a result of beatings they received from some of the violent and aggressive patients at the hospital.
According to him one had to act smart in order to avoid encountering such voilent patients. According to him, but for God’s favour, he would also have fallen victim recently.
He contends that it is those nurses who are lucky that come out of the encounters with only torn uniforms.
What was also worrying, Mr Pappoe said, was that over the past 100 years the hospital had not been rehabilitated and because of that many rooms in the hospital have their roofs leaking. He said the facility was deteriorating and making structures unfit for human habitation.
The PNO made this known in an interview with the press when the Adabraka branch of the Maranatha Evangelistic Ministries presented items to the hospital as part of their community social responsibility project aimed at giving back to society in the spirit of love and compassion.
The items donated included bags of sugar and rice, secondhand clothing, buckets, blankets, soaps, toilet rolls, bottled mineral water, assortment of drinks and detergents.
Presenting the items, the Youth President of the Maranatha Evangelistic Ministries, Mr Issac Obeng Adjei, explained that, “we are aware of the myriad of problems that the hospital faces and, therefore, decided to channel this assistance to you”.
The church members were taken round the various wards in the hospital, including geriatric, children, the Special, Female and Male wards, to make them appreciate the work of the doctors and nurses at the hospital.
The authorities of the psychiatric hospital expressed their gratitude for the gesture from the church and gave the assurance that the items would be used for the intended purpose.
