Abuakwa North MP sponsors medical programmes for 3 Bright SHS students with 8As

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North, Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo-Frempong, has pledged to sponsor the entire medical programmes of three students from Bright Senior High School (SHS) at Kukurantumi.

The students, Richard Kwabena Damoah, Mercy Adjeley Okang and Yatih Okrah Boabassah, each obtained eight 'A's in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination and reached the semi-final stage of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

The MP also presented them with GH¢20,000. In addition, six other students from Ofori Panin Senior High School and Saviour Senior High School, who reached the quarter-final stage of the competition, received laptops.

The three Bright SHS students have gained admission to the University of Ghana, Legon, while the six others have been admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Presenting the laptops at the Abuakwa North Municipal Education Directorate in Kukurantumi on Friday, October 16, 2026, Mr Addo-Frempong said he was inspired by the students' performance, particularly Bright SHS, the only private school to reach the semi-final stage.

"In Abuakwa North, we have never had that kind of success which had been associated with big schools such as Presec, Legon and this year alone we have Bright SHS reaching the semi-final stage and Ofori Panin and Saviour SHS also reaching the quarter-final stage," he said.

"I have therefore decided to fund the tertiary education of the Bright SHS students and present laptops to the remaining students from the Ofori Panin SHS and Saviour SHS," he added.

He said the support would encourage other students in the constituency to pursue science and mathematics-related courses and become professionals such as doctors and engineers.

The Abuakwa North Municipal Education Director, Mrs Grace Adza-wude, said the study of science and mathematics would open the way for students to become professionals in various fields.

She said students in the municipality had previously struggled with the subjects, but the intervention of the Korea International Cooperation Agency had improved performance, particularly among female students.

Mrs Adza-wude urged the students to use the laptops wisely and encouraged teachers, parents and stakeholders to take science and mathematics seriously.

The Headmaster of Bright SHS, Mr Dominic Acquah, expressed happiness that the MP had decided to fund the students' entire medical programme at the University of Ghana. He expressed hope that the school would win the ultimate prize in next year's competition.

One of the beneficiaries, Richard Kwabena Damoah, said the MP's gesture would ease the financial burden on their parents, adding that university education had always been too expensive for most families.

He commended Mr Addo-Frempong for the support.
