Abu Ramadan, Evans Nimako object to ‘NHIS voters’ list

Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako, the two applicants seeking clarification of a Supreme Court judgement on the voters register, yesterday filed an application objecting to the list of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registrants on the electoral roll presented to the court by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Confirming the move to the Daily Graphic, Mr Ramadan said the applicants’ legal team filed their application in opposition to what the EC presented to the court within the deadline stipulated by the court

He was, however, tight-lipped as to what the application contained.

“I cannot tell you what we filed but you will definitely get to know about it in court. What I can tell you is that what we filed is not far from the issues that we raised before the court last Thursday. What is different now is that we have found more staggering revelations on the list. Let us wait till tomorrow to find out what the opinion of the court will be,’’ he said.

List

The EC last Wednesday presented a list of 56,739 people as NHIS registrants on the voters register to the apex court.

Counsel for the two applicants at the court sitting last Thursday vehemently objected to the list, describing it as “spurious, conjured and fictitious”.

In view of their objections, the court, presided over by the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood, directed the applicants to file their written submissions detailing their objections by 11 a.m. yesterday.

It also fixed today to give its ruling on the substantive application by the two applicants for clarification and further directions on the judgement.

The submission of the list of NHIS registrants on the electoral roll by the EC to the court followed an order by the court to the EC to furnish it with the list and also show how it intended to comply with its judgement on the voters register delivered on May 5, 2016.

The court, in the judgement, ordered the EC to take steps to clean or delete the names of persons not qualified to be on the register.

They included minors, those who registered with NHIS cards and the deceased.
