He said, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) had received financial assistance from the bank to expand its transmission grid, which includes evacuating electric power to neighbouring countries.

Commissioning four ambassador-designates at the Flagstaff House yesterday, the President said Ghana had plans to become a net exporter of electricity and the government was working seriously on that.

The envoys are Mrs Johanna Odonkor Svanikier for France; Mrs Novisi Aku Abaidoo, Benin; Mrs Edith Haizel, Denmark, and Mrs Elizabeth Nicol, the Republic of Korea.

President Mahama described the four envoys as accomplished women in their various fields of endeavour and expressed the hope that they would carry their wealth of experience into their new positions.

He said the relations between Ghana and the countries where the envoys had been posted to were very fruitful and, therefore, urged them to build on the bilateral cooperation.

French relations

Touching on France, President Mahama said French investors continued to locate in the country, adding that Ghana had a lot of bilateral cooperation agreements with France, especially in the water sector.

He said France was also involved in the oil and gas industry in the country and consequently charged the new envoy to further promote French investments in the country.

Benin

On Benin, President Mahama said President Boni Yayi had asked him to increase power supply to that country and promised that as and when the power situation in the country improved, the government would consider the request.

The President also touched on Denmark and said Ghana's relations with that country were excellent.

Later, two outgoing ambassadors accredited to Ghana were at the Flagstaff House to bid the President farewell after completing their duty tours.

They were Madam Abdoulmoumine Hadjio Yaye of Niger and Mr Mohammed Eisa Ismail Dehab of The Sudan.

President Mahama said Ghana was committed to reopening its mission in The Sudan in respect of reciprocity.

He expressed his wish that the crisis in the Sahel and the Maghreb Region would be resolved, so that The Sudan could play its role in the development of that region.

Ghana, he said, would continue to contribute to peace operations in that region.

He commended President Umar al-Bashir for the mature stance he took in resolving the conflict with South Sudan.
