29,000 Dollar water facilities for Yendi

The Rural Water Development Programme (RWDP) of the Church of Christ (COC) has provided the people of Yendi with two mechanised water systems at a cost of US$29,000.
The facilities are to help solve the perennial water shortages faced by the people in the Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region.
They have the capacity to produce about 94,000 gallons of potable water a day.

The municipality and its environs was in June this year hit by severe water shortage following the drying up of water at the main source, River Daka.

Support

The intervention by the church formed part of efforts by development partners at Yendi to help address the annual water shortage often experienced during the dry season.
The project was executed by the RWDP with support from the Ghana West Africa Mission (GWAM) of the COC.
The facilities were handed over to the Yendi Municipal Assembly at a ceremony last Tuesday to ensure its effective management in the provision of potable water for the people.

Intervention

The Project Director of the RWDP, Nathaniel Adams Jnr, explained that the intervention was in response to the perennial water shortage the people faced in the area that often compelled most of them to resort to drinking unwholesome water.
He said his organisation also planned to provide four additional water systems at different locations in the municipality in the next four years as part of a long-term measure to address the situation.
According to Mr Adams Jnr, his outfit had so far provided a total of 840 boreholes to other communities in the Eastern corridor of the region to help eradicate water-borne diseases.
He further advised the people to adopt good basic water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices to cut down on malaria and water-borne diseases.
The Executive Director of GWAM of the COC, Mr Josiah Tilton, thanked the people of Yendi for their support and collaboration leading to the early completion of the project.

Commendation

The Deputy Coordinating Director of the Yendi Municipal Assembly, Mr Amin Mohammed Baba, commended the church for the gesture and pledged the assembly’s preparedness to ensure the regular maintenance of the facilities.
The Galico -Naa, Kasim Ziblim, who chaired the ceremony on behalf of the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani, also expressed the appreciation of the chiefs and people of Yendi to the church for the intervention and appealed to them to also provide the people of Galico with a borehole.
