Former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and the late Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, will be honoured on October 26, 2013, at the State House in Accra.

The two institutions organising the awards announced this at a press conference to launch the event in Accra.

According to the Head of Secretariat of the GIH, Ms Helen Ankrah, a two-day conference on housing would be organised ahead of the awards to engage stakeholders on government plans to build on workable strategies to resolve housing issues.

After the conference, she said a housing pact detailing the outcome and strategies adopted by the participants in the conference would be presented to the Ministry of Water Resources Works and Housing to be considered in the national housing policy.

She explained that housing was very essential to the socio-economic development of the country, and therefore, there was the need to implement the national housing policy.

“Housing, when organised properly, would tidy the communities, create jobs, build capacity and create economic vibrancy for national development,” she stated.

Ms Ankrah said the GIH was working closely with sector and related professionals to shape the housing agenda to create a better future for the communities.

Using good analytical judgement to provide solutions for policies, she said the GIH was offering the platform to bring all professionals and practitioners in the industry together.

In her address, the Deputy Director of Housing at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works, and Housing, Madam Theresa Tufuor, noted that the national housing policy was under review to meet the current needs of the society.

She said the ministry had opened its doors to all partners in order to address the 1.7 million housing deficit.

The Managing Director of the State Housing Corporation, Dr Mark Nii Akwei, said quality housing had a great impact on the growth of a person; hence the need to pay attention to the housing policy in the country to provide quality housing for Ghanaians.
