10 Suspected armed robbers grabbed

TEN suspected armed robbers, including a woman, believed to be members of a gang operating in and around Adenta, Ashale Botwe, Madina, Legon and Haatso, have been arrested by the police.

They were arrested at their hideout at Commando, an area near the SSNIT Flats of Adenta in Accra, following a tip-off.

They are Kofi Komo, 50; Christian Apesah, 42; Michael Morney, 27; Emmanuel Yaovi Dogor, and Edinam Agbezu, 21.

The others are Simon Elloh, 35; Wallace Dzah 21; Bright Ameko 20; Evans Karikari, 20; and Favour Addo.

The Accra Regional Police Commander, Dr K. K. Manfo, said on January 21, this year, at about 1a.m. a group of armed robbers wielding locally made pistols attacked a house at Commando, while the owner of the house had gone to work, leaving the wife alone in the house.

He said the robbers made away with a 20-inch colour television set, jewellery, two suitcases full of clothes, two loaded shot guns belonging to the owner of the house and ?5.5 million cash.

Not satisfied with the booty, the robbers severely assaulted and raped the woman.

Dr Manfo said a report was made to the police who initiated investigations into the incident.

The Regional Commander said three days after the incident, a police and military patrol team on duty had a call that armed robbers were firing shots at Commando, and they rushed to the place.

He said when the team got to the scene, it saw a man, who was later identified as Reuben Gagblezu, sitting in front of a house, with gun shot wounds and holding a gun.

Dr Manfo said Reuben told the patrol team that he had been attacked in his house by six armed robbers who fired a shot at him but he managed to hit one with an iron bar and he fell unconscious so he locked him up in his room.

He said the rest of the robbers managed to escape, leaving behind the one who was being held captive.

Dr Manfo said Reuben also managed to wrest a gun from one of the robbers.

He said the patrol team took the victim, who was then bleeding profusely, to the 37 Military Hospital and the suspect to the Police Hospital, where he died shortly after admission.

According to him with the assistance of members of the public, the robbers were traced to their hideout where they were arrested and placed in police custody.

He said the guns retrieved from the robbers have been identified as the one stolen during the first robbery.

The woman who was attacked by the robbers has identified three of them as those who raped her.

The police have launched full-scale investigations into the robberies.
